I know, I know. This isn’t exactly an “outdoors” recipe. But homemade tartar sauce is a wonderful complement to many meals prepared with your wild-caught fish.
It’s quick and easy and, once you’ve tasted it, you’ll never want to choose store-bought tartar sauce again.
Homemade Tartar Sauce Recipe
- 1 cup Mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup Diced pickles
- 1/4 cup Yellow mustard
- 2 teaspoons Lemon juice
Step 1: Place mayonnaise in a mixing bowl.
Step 2: Dice pickles and add to mayonnaise.
Step 3: Add yellow mustard and lemon juice.
Step 4: Stir to combine.
Substitutions and tips
I like a good amount of tang in my tartar sauce, but the amounts of yellow mustard and lemon juice can be tailored to fit your taste,
If you want a sweeter sauce, go light on the lemon juice and add honey. If heat is your thing, add a few dashes of hot sauce for a little zip.
Dill can also be added to this recipe for a greater depth of flavor.
Substituting dijon, stone-ground, or spicy brown mustard will also yield unique tastes.
Using avocado mayo will make this recipe Keto-friendly.
This tartar sauce is best enjoyed fresh. If you plan to store it, place it in a tightly-sealed container in your refrigerator and give it a stir periodically.
